The Magic of Maca Root

The Maca plant has been cultivated for thousands of years on the high plains of Peru’s Andes mountain range. In traditional Peruvian medicine Maca has been used as an aphrodisiac and to treat symptoms ranging from depression to memory loss [1]. It is thought to be a potent energizer.

The root, which is the only edible part of the plant, has a nutty aroma faintly reminiscent of butterscotch.  Over the last few decades it has developed a reputation as an energizing superfood. So, is this just hype of might there be substance behind the claims? Well the good news is that science is starting to prove what the Peruvians have known for centuries. Maca Root is packed full of minerals and B vitamins and is a particularly good source of iron [2]. This powdered root certainly lives up to its reputation. Take a look at some of the facts.

           Helping with Hormonal Balance

So the evidence is certainly out there to back up claims that Maca Root stimulates the endocrine system [3]. They’re not yet sure how it does this, but one possibility is that the plant sterols in Maca work to improve adrenal, thyroid and pancreatic function [4]. There is some evidence that it may help with post-menopausal symptoms [5].  Anyone who has suffered the mood swings and lows connected with hormonal dysfunction will understand the value of anything that might help.

           Could it be an Aphrodisiac?

Researchers are starting to look into the claims that Maca Root may boost the libido and the results are pretty interesting. Animal studies have found that Maca may increase sexual behaviour in male rats [6] and Black Maca has been found to increase sperm counts and sperm motility in rats [7]. Its early days as far as the research is concerned but you might just find that a regular dose of Maca Root energizes you in ways you might not have been expecting.

           Helping against Depression and Boosting Brain Function

In traditional Peruvian medicine Maca is a go-to remedy for those needing a mental boost, including those suffering from the symptoms of depressive illnesses.  Now studies [8] are starting to show that there may be something to be said for trying Maca Root in the fight against depression. And yes-there is evidence [9] that this Maca (particularly Black Maca) can improve memory and learning. So starting your day with a Maca Latte really might help provide the mental clarity you’re going to need to do your thing all day long.     

English Breakfast Tea

The perfect cup of tea is as much part of British life as strawberries and cream and cucumber sandwiches. There actually might be a grain of truth in the theory that the humble “cuppa”, rather than coffee, provided the stimulant behind the 18th century Age of Enlightenment. This was a time when tea had become the go-to drink of those who could afford it. Wasn’t Isaac Newton sipping tea under that apple tree when he put together his gravitational theory [11]? Were the intellectual powers of the likes of Locke and Hobbes unlocked by this gentle stimulant? It’s entirely possible.

English Breakfast Tea is made from black tea leaves and is traditionally taken quite strong. It has relatively high levels of caffeine, to bring the drinker a refreshing “lift”.

OK so you get why we’ve included Maca Root and English Breakfast Tea in this awesome latte. But what’s with the spices? We tried out lots of spice mixes before deciding that this blend of cinnamon, ginger, cloves and pink peppercorn were just what was needed to give this delicious energizing drink the taste we were looking for. These four spices work perfectly together to bring a hint of warming sweet flavor to our English Breakfast Maca Latte.

Servings: 1 latte
  • 4 oz water
  • 4 oz oat milk
  • 1 sachet Pique English Breakfast Tea Crystals
  • 1/2 inch knob fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon maca root powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of clove powder
  • Pinch of pink peppercorns
  1. Remove skin from ginger and chop finely.

  2. Add all other ingredients to saucepan and simmer gently over low heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently.

  3. Remove from heat and steep covered for 2 more minutes, then enjoy immediately.
