What’s so special about Earl Grey?
Earl Grey has been the go-to breakfast blend for tea aficionados for almost 200 years. Fans of this blend love the floral aroma and delicate tasting notes unique to this tea. What makes Earl Grey special is the addition of bergamot oil, a Mediterranean citrus fruit. This brings a natural sweetness, which might conjure up memories of an afternoon spent in the garden. It’s less bitter than most black teas, but is every bit as uplifting.
But here’s the thing you might have missed about Earl Grey Tea. It might also be bringing you some pretty astonishing health benefits.
Why Earl Grey Tea is good for you
Bergamot is rich in antioxidants.
Unlike most black teas, Earl Grey brings you free-radical zapping antioxidants. It gets this from the bergamot, which gives this tea so much more than its sweet aroma and delicious taste. Bergamot has also demonstrated an ability to enhance autophagy, which is your body’s natural cellular renewal process.
It’s a powerful prebiotic.
Because the black tea used in Earl Grey has been fermented, it can act as a prebiotic, helping you maintain the right balance of healthy gut bacteria. The molecules in tea are thought to stay around in the gut longer than many prebiotics. Add to this the fact that black tea may well have anti-inflammatory properties and you’ll understand why a regular tea habit can help support good digestive function.
Tea really can help calm and focus the mind.
You’ve probably already experienced the uplifting effect of a good cup of tea. Scientists are starting to explain why this might be. Tea may help boost levels of serotonin, which we think of as the happy hormone. Also, EEG studies have found that L-theanine, an amino acid found only in tea, may have a direct effect on the human brain, helping the mind stay mentally alert and calm at the same time.
The Creamy Goodness of Almond Butter
We experimented with a variety of non-dairy creamers before hitting on almond butter as the perfect addition to this iced latte. Almonds are known to be packed full of nutritional goodness and as part of a healthy, balanced diet, might even help with weight loss. You’ll love the buttery taste and rich texture the almond butter you’ve used brings to this delicious cooler.
What you’re going to love about this energizing latte is the way it brings you sweetness without being too sweet. A pinch of salt helps balance out the flavour of the honey (think salted caramel!) and you get to control any additional sweetness by deciding how much orange blossom or rose water to add. The drink you end up with is something to savor and enjoy. You’ll probably feel the positive effects for hours afterwards.
