Skin looking like it needs a detox? Searching for a latte that will actually help you get your beauty sleep? This sublime, soothing drink might be just what the beautician ordered.
Rooibos and beetroot, both known for their powerful detoxifying properties combine in this latte, which can be enjoyed throughout the day. Taken regularly it will help fight the signs of ageing.
Why rooibos? Most folk think of rooibos, a herb found only in the mountains above South Africa’s Western Cape , as something of a poor relation in the health-giving department. Well it’s time for these perceptions to change. Let’s take a look at some of the powerful health and beauty benefits of rooibos tea.
Rooibos Tea Benefits
1. Astonishing detoxifying properties
Your liver is a highly efficient machine which has an amazing capacity to fight the daily assault of toxin-induced free radicals – the baddies known to be a cause of ageing. But over time the liver’s ability to work effectively lessens and this is where your diet and lifestyle choices become important.
We now know that rooibos tea has the power to enhance the liver’s antioxidant capacity. It is known to contain a cocktail of health-giving phytonutrients which zap up those harmful free-radicals. And here’s a fun fact. Rooibos tea is the only known source of aspalathin – a powerful flavonoid.
2. Younger-looking skin and hair
For generations rooibos has been enjoyed in Africa, not only for its taste, but also as a beauty booster. Rooibos is a natural source of both zinc and a rare compound called AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid) which help combat acne and rejuvenate older, wrinkled skin . It’s a secret which most beauty houses don’t want you to know about, but rooibos, taken in its natural form could be kinder to your skin than harsher, expensive beauty creams.
One of the first things you notice about a person is their hair, but how often has yours let you down? As we age, the hair becomes thinner and more brittle. Wouldn’t you just love to find a natural product to bring your hair back to life? Well yes- you guessed it! Rooibos is known to strengthen the hair follicles, preventing hair loss and encouraging hair to become thicker and shinier. What’s not to like?
3. Supports good digestion
Scientists are increasingly waking up to the link between good gut health and good health. Did you realise that you have around ten times more bacteria in your gut than you have human cells in your entire body ? So it’s no surprise that when your gut bacteria is out of balance, your general health suffers.
If you experience unexplained fatigue and digestive problems that you just can’t shake off, this could be a sign of dysbiosis- an imbalance between good and bad gut bacteria. Adjusting your diet to introduce prebiotic and probiotic foods, will help restore gut balance to healthy levels.
Rooibos tea is an effective prebiotic. Taken regularly it can promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria and inhibit the spread of nasty gut pathogens.
4. It may help you calm down and sleep
Rooibos tea is low in tannins, the compound which gives green and black tea its bitter taste. It has a naturally sweet, almost nutty taste, and best of all it is completely caffeine-free. That makes it an ideal evening beverage. In South Africa rooibos has been given to children as a soothing bedtime drink for generations.
Could it actually have calming properties? Yep! Scientists at Stellenbosch University have found that the aspalathin and nothofagin flavonoids in rooibos interfere with the production of cortisol, the stress hormone. Magnesium, also found in rooibos tea is known to help promote deep sleep, and the calcium it contains is used by the body to manufacture melatonin, the sleep hormone.
Manuka and Beetroot as Beauty Boosters
The added beetroot and manuka honey in this latte bring their own beauty benefits.
Bursting with folates, vitamins and minerals, beetroot is known to help flush out toxins and purify the blood. It’s powerful detox properties will leave your skin zit-free, smoother and positively glowing.
Whose beauty regime wouldn’t benefit from a bit more high quality shut-eye and younger-looking skin? Enter manuka honey. You’d have to have been living under a rock to be unaware of manukas antibacterial and prebiotic powers. But did you also know that manuka’s sticky goodness can help promote sleep, fight acne and boost the production of collagen-the stuff that gives skin its elasticity?
So next time you need to calm down and unwind ready for a good night’s sleep, don’t reach for the wine bottle or sleeping pills. Help your body to detoxify and unwind naturally with this delicious vanilla rooibos beetroot latte. We think you’ll love it and it just might help you get that beauty sleep you crave.
