Hibiscus- As a Beautifying Elixir

So how might hibiscus help? This awesome brightly colored flower has been used for thousands of years in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. Today we know that it’s packed full of antioxidants which can help your body fight back against oxidative stress at a cellular level [3]. On top of that, hibiscus has very high levels of vitamin C, which will help your cells produce collagen; the stuff that gives your skin its elasticity. There might even be a link between hibiscus and hair growth [4]. So yes; hibiscus really might be a potent weapon in the fight against fading beauty.

Cacao- All the Goodness of Chocolate without the Carbs

Isn’t it just chocolate?

We’ve added cacao butter to this keto-friendly latte. Isn’t that just fatty chocolate? Well, yes and no. Cacao beans are the basic ingredient of any chocolate. But cacao differs from cocoa in that cocoa has been heated to very high temperatures and processed, whilst cacao is the name given to the raw, unprocessed product. You’ve probably heard about the health benefits of chocolate. But if we’re facing the facts it has to be said that most of these studies have not been carried out on the processed chocolate bars that you buy in the stores, but on cacao in its basic form. But because we rarely consume cacao in its basic form, the headlines tend to get lost in translation.

So, if you really want to get the upsides that these studies talk about, without having to face any of the downsides that come from eating sugary processed foods, perhaps it’s time to take a serious look at cacao.

Antioxidant Powers

Cacao is an excellent source of antioxidants. In fact, it has an even higher antioxidant capacity than most teas and red wine [5].

Chocolate as Brain Food

Perhaps the most exciting health benefit of chocolate (which really means benefit of cacao) is its ability to improve cognitive function [6]. This is down to the flavonoids, such as epicatechin, which are abundant in cacao. This chemical may even help protect against Alzheimer’s [7]. Best of all, epicatechin has been found to be a mood-booster [8]. These mood-enhancing properties are greatest with unprocessed cacao, rather than the corrupted cocoa found in chocolate bars. So there’s science to back up something you’ve suspected for years. The right kind of chocolate really can make you feel better!

Cacao – a Mineral Minefield

With our busy lives and the availability of unhealthy, processed foods, it’s all too easy to slip into eating patterns which end up leaving your body low in essential minerals. So isn’t it good to know that something as delicious as cacao butter is there to help? Raw cacao is jam-packed with nutritional goodies including magnesium, copper and iron [9]. Magnesium helps the body convert food into energy,[10] which has to be a big plus. Copper helps the body form collagen [11] and together with iron helps in the formation of red blood cells.

The remaining ingredients

We thought carefully about the other ingredients to add to this hibiscus cacao latte. Obviously, getting the right taste was key, but at the same time we wanted to use health-boosting extras which work well on a keto-friendly diet.

We’ve used macadamia nut milk not just because of its delicious creamy texture and foaming properties but also because of its nutritional value. Macadamia milk is one of the few known sources of palmitoleic acid, a fatty acid which is thought to lower cholesterol levels [12]. Because it’s made by soaking the nuts in water, it brings you much of the nutritional goodness of macadamias without the high calorific content of the nuts themselves.

Beetroot powder complements the taste of hibiscus in ways you might not expect. And of course it also brings you a blast of antioxidant goodness to help your body resist the inflammation, oxidative stress and cognitive decline linked to the aging process [13].

We found that the cinnamon and Manuka honey were just right to round off the awesome flavour of this delicious, healthy beverage. If you’re going to indulge in a little taste of sweetness whilst doing the low carb thing, your best bet is to do so with the health benefits of Manuka honey. It’s optional of course, but we think it’s worth it. Enjoy!

  • 1 sachet Pique Hibiscus Mint Tea Crystals
  • 4 oz water
  • 4 oz macadamia nut milk
  • tsp Ceylon cinnamon powder
  • ½ tsp manuka honey
  • ½ tsp beetroot powder
  • ½ tsp raw cacao butter
  1. Combine all ingredients on the stovetop and warm together until gently simmering. 

  2. Add everything to a blender and blend until frothy. Sweeten to taste and serve immediately.
