Health and Beauty Benefits of Hibiscus
Hibiscus has been used for millennia for its health-giving properties and powerful flavor. There is evidence of its use in ancient Egypt and it is a staple ingredient in traditional Chinese and in Ayurvedic medicine. Something that’s been around for so long is going to be a winner.
Today we know that hibiscus can work wonders on tired, aging skin. It is packed full of antioxidants and is thought to play a role in reducing the damage of oxidative stress. Hibiscus is particularly high in vitamin C which is known to help stimulate collagen production, protect against harmful UV rays and help the skin to keep its elasticity.
There is even a possible link between hibiscus and hair growth . This plant really does seem to help keep you looking young and beautiful!
Why Coconut Water?
Why did we add coconut water to this detox tea? It’s not just for the taste. Coconut water, which comes from the centre of young, green coconuts, is wonderfully thirst-quenching and refreshing. A study published in 2012 found coconut water to be just as effective as a manufactured electrolyte sports drink in restoring hydration after exercise. It’s also high in potassium which can help your body detox from a diet high in processed foods.
A Powerful Blend of Spices
The crushed pepper, ginger and turmeric add a spicy kick that’s sure to wake up even the most jaded digestive system. But as with all our tasty recipes, it’s not just about the flavour. We’ve put a lot of thought into the health-promoting qualities of the added extras.
Pepper and Turmeric – an unbeatable match?
Turmeric, the spice that gives curry its yellow color, contains a powerful polyphenol, curcumin, which is well known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory powers.
Crushed red peppers bring you the health benefits of capsaicin, the compound that give peppers their spicy taste. Capsaicin is thought to promote good gut health.
Best of all, there is growing evidence that combining turmeric with pepper may significantly enhance the health-giving properties of the active compounds in each. It’s a perfect match!
Everybody loves the sweet, spicy aroma of ground ginger and we particularly like the way the ginger added to this detox cooler helps lift the combined ingredients to a level where they taste so good together. Ginger has a rich phytochemistry and has been used to treat a range of digestion problems for well over 2000 years. This powerful spice is now known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties. Its ability to mop up harmful free radicals makes it a perfect addition to any detox drink.
